Champions League Playoff Implications – 2024

December 10, 2024 by TheCommish Leave a Comment

In the famous words of Bruce Buffer, “It’s TIME!”.  After a 14 week regular season, all five playoff fields are set, and it’s time to take a look at who could crash the Champions League party heading into 2025.

Current Champions League Order

  1. Jamie Thompson (Chelsea) **
  2. Rob Conrod (FC Copenhagen)
  3. Cole Davidson (Borussia Dortmund)
  4. Sean Laycock (RB Leipzig) **
  5. Greg Campbell (Manchester City)
  6. Mark Bryce (Real Madrid) **
  7. Rick Scott (Manchester United) **
  8. Nick Caric (Bayern Munich) **
  9. Shaun Tran (Tottenham)
  10. Kyle Reinders (Paris St-Germain) **
  11. Ricky Gorton (Liverpool)
  12. Ryan Smith (Barcelona)

** – these teams are in the Champions League playoffs and vying for next season’s top spot.

This year only the bottom 3 are in play to lose their Champions League, as Greg is giving up all of his teams for the time being.  Let’s take a look at who could make it in this year.  Teams with asterisks are already in Champions League.

Eskimo Bros Football League

  1. Chalupa Batman (Sean Laycock) *
  2. Cole Beasley is an Idiot (Jon Tang)
  3. Endzone Dancers (Scott McKay)
  4. Deadly Nagintas (Rick Scott) *
  5. Tom Selleck’s Moustache (Ryan Smith) *
  6. Long Snappers (Mark Bryce) *

A lot of the same playoff teams from last year, with only Laker replacing Conrod in the dance.  That said, McKay lost his Champions League spot last season, so he has a little extra to play for now.  Two of the 3 division champs are looking to get into the league, and Smitty is 2nd in line for losing a spot, so this one could be interesting. The Chalupas are heavy favourites after a dominant regular season, and the Nagintas go for their 4th trophy as the top Wild Card entry.

REEL Football League

  1. Polk High Panthers (Steve Leacock)
  2. SCLSU Mud Dogs (Jason Peat)
  3. West Canaan High (Jamie Thompson) *
  4. Eastern State University (Rick Scott) *
  5. Mean Machine (Cole Davidson) *
  6. East Dillon High (Sean Laycock) *

The top 2 seeds in REEL come from outside the Champions League and present the best opportunity for someone to take a spot – although leaker has had an invite previously, and passed.  Only one different team in the playoffs here as well, with JP swapping spots with Gingy as the Central Division winner.  We have a rematch of last seasons 4/5 game, this time with the teams flip flopped.  Cole went all the way from here to a title last year, so hopefully the winner of this game can do so again this year (assuming I win of course).

Best of the Best

  1. Three Penis Winos (Rick Scott) *
  2. Pork’s Squad (Jamie Thompson) *
  3. Steamin Beamins (Scott McKay)
  4. Chalupa Batman (Sean Laycock) *
  5. Devil’s Rejects (Shaun Tran) *
  6. Bryce Is Right (Mark Bryce) *

McKay gives himself another shot at getting back into the Champions League with a division title here as well.  This one is a serious toss up as the top 5 teams are all loaded.  Brycey is likely overmatched, but we’ve seen before, once you get in, anything can happen.

Small School Glory

  1. Richmond (Rick Gorton) *
  2. Northwestern State (Kyle Reinders) *
  3. South Dakota State (Rick Scott) *
  4. Montana State (Mark Fitzgerald)
  5. Harvard Crimson (Ryan Rowe)
  6. UC Davis (Jamie Thompson) *

Ricky takes the top spot in the regular season and has to be considered the team to beat at this point.  They did have a brutal Week 14, but it was a brutal stretch of byes. Kyle probably has the most loaded team with long term prospects considered, and took the other Bye, but they were only 4th in scoring, so this may be everyone else’s last chance at a title here for a bit.  Fitzy is always a tough out, and he really wants that Champions League spot, and I believe this might be Ryan’s first playoff appearance.  (The commish’s editor is too lazy to confirm this)

Good luck to everyone still in the mix.  Hopefully we get at least one new squad for Champs to replace Greg, otherwise we’ll have to revert back to the previous season list and re-instate someone.
