We’ve officially reached the half-way point in the season, and the playoff races are shaping up nicely. Currently, it looks like it’s an 8 team race for the 6 spots, with the remaining 4 teams already sitting at least 6 points out and having some serious work to do to get back in it. We no longer have any winless teams as WDJFS finally picked up their first win, and an extra victory point to go along with it. Not a single team made it through their division games without a loss, and the Nagintas are the only team without a division win. This is the parity the NFL has been looking for.
Matchups
4-3 Fear Boners (160.26) – 2-5 Deadly Nagintas (159.28)
The Boners managed to pull out a narrow victory to remain in the top 6 this week. As usual, the squad was carried by David Johnson, despite him being part of a 6-6 game. The majority of the linebackers showed up as well, as the unit averaged over 10 points. The Nagintas have several candidates for Goat of the Week with 3 players scoring under 1 point to spoil solid efforts from Brees and Evans. The Boners get their unofficial Bye week in Week 8 and then 4 straight weeks of teams they’re competing for a playoff spot with. The Nagintas on the other hand, have a tough stretch ahead but have plenty of opportunities to play spoiler, assuming they don’t sell off any key pieces.
6-1 Chalupa Batman (197.02) – 5-2 Loose Bandits (180.42)
The Chalupas knocked off the Bandits in what has to be considered a statement game for their ‘bottom team’. They have extended their lead atop the league standings to four points, giving them some breathing room, and the ability to overcome a dud week down the stretch. The Chalupas secondary was the difference, with Landon Collins leading the way with a whopping 26 points. On the other side of the field, the Bandits continued to get solid play out of most of their offense, but a couple guys put up stinkers that you expect double digits from each week. This should be a fun race for the top spot during the 2nd half of the regular season.
1-6 What Does John Fox Say (179.43) – 2-5 Knuckle Ballers (151.88)
WDJFS picked up their first W of 2016, taking down the Ballers by a decent margin. Their running backs were money and their defense was the difference in a match-up featuring multiple scores of 1 point or less on each side. Congrats on the line up fine Robert. The Ballers were pretty solid on offense if you ignore Diggs and Smith but only had a pair of defenders make it into double digits. That’s generally not a recipe for success, especially when your opponent puts up their season-high score. It’s a laughable high score, but a high score all the same. In all fairness, it doesn’t matter until Week 14 for these teams, as their just fighting to not end up as the 2016 Frittata.
4-3 Tom Selleck’s Moustache (197.30) – 4-3 San Juan Bananas (161.88)
The Stache hold on to their division lead with the solid victory over the Bananas. All you need to know about this match-up comes from the RB position (89.1 to 7.8). The Stache were even able to overcome a pair of defensive goose eggs. The Bananas weren’t just terrible at RB, as 3 of 4 LB combined for under 10 points…that’s right, COMBINED. The Stache face a pair of contenders the next couple weeks before finishing out the season with 5 teams currently on the outside of the playoff picture. San Juan, on the other hand, has the entire Senor Frogs division to go along with their 3 division games. They could still be the 4th highest score at the end of the year, and could still be on the outside looking in.
4-3 Greg Schiano is an Idiot (197.00) – 2-5 Long Snappers (120.20)
The Idiots have managed to go from Frittata contender to a playoff position with their 3rd straight victory. If not for that narrow loss in Week 1, they would be leading the division. I guess that’s something the rest of the teams outside of the playoffs can look at and strive for. Outside of Ware and Montgomery, there wasn’t much to get excited about on offense, but the defense came to play with the LB going for over 60 points and Bethea adding another 16+. The Snappers usually solid D was a letdown, and the offense continues to be non-existent. They started Chris Conley and Justin Hunter for crying out loud. That said, if the Snappers can get some bodies back, they have the entire Taco Corp left, so they could make up some ground in the 2nd half.
4-3 Rex in the City (211.10) – 4-3 Endzone Dancers (171.45)
The Rexes extended their division lead knocking off the Dancers to give themselves a 4VP cushion. The Rexes followed the Stache recipe for success with a big day out of the running back group with all 3 going for 20 or more points, to go along with almost 60 from their LB. The Dancers continue to take zeroes, and cost themselves line up fines, this time starting John Brown. They could have started extra players and it likely wouldn’t have affected the outcome of this one. The Rexes appear to have the easier schedule remaining, and should take home their 2nd division crown in 3 years, while the Dancers fight to stay out of the Frittata Bowl.
Week 7 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week
Melvin Gordon (Tom Selleck’s Moustache) – Smitty had 3 of the 4 highest scores again this week, with Gordon ending up with top honors for the offense.
Defensive Player of the Week
Landon Collins (Chalupa Batman) – Collins has nicely replaced Rashad Jones in the Chalupas line-up, this week even managing a defensive score.
Rookie of the Week
Michael Thomas (Fear Boners) – The NO wideout is quietly putting himself into ROTY consideration with his 4th straight game with over 15 points.
Goat of the Week
Cory James (Deadly Nagintas) – Only managed 1 assist while Collins put up 12 points on the bench.
Pickup of the Week
Ty Montgomery (Greg Schiano is an Idiot) – I still can’t believe he was on waivers, to begin with.
Bench Player of the Week
Davante Adams (Knuckle Ballers) – Probably the best performance by a Ballers player all year. Too bad it was wasted on the bench.
Bonehead Coaching Move of the Week
Rick Scott (Deadly Nagintas) – Starting Don Jackson for the Packers Thursday night over Justin Forsett. Probably cost the squad at least a shot at a playoff spot (5 VP swing on Boners).
