It was a rough week in the EBFL, as we lost several more star offensive players, with names like Allen, Smith and Bell being lost for the season, and Forte for possibly an extended period of time. Several of the big names lost were part of contending teams, and it should make for an interesting couple weeks as we approach the trade deadline.
With 5 weeks to go, it looks like we’ll have a legitimate play-off race, unlike 2014 where all 6 spots were pretty much locked up by this point in the year. Currently, 9 teams have a realistic chance at making the big dance, basically 3 from each division. Week 9 division match ups may eliminate a team or two, and with 6 teams on bye, it could be tough for some teams to field a decent line up.
Matchups
3-5 Knuckle Ballers (199.48) – 3-5 San Juan Bananas (188.62)
The Ballers get a big win, and the Bananas take another play-off hope crushing loss. They are currently hanging in there, but continue to make it tough on themselves, losing tight match ups and important VP. Tom Brady continues to roll for the Ballers, and should get some MVP consideration, while the TE and Demaryius also had big games. The Bananas rolled 5 wideouts, and Julian Edelman outscored the other 4 combined. That pretty much sums this loss up in a nutshell. The Bananas are now 5 points out, with 5 games to go, including one against the Idiots. They’ll pretty much need to win the other 4 to have any shot.
5-3 Deadly Nagintas (215.37) – 2-6 Rex in the City (147.33)
The Nagintas return to the drivers seat in the Senor Frogs division with the win against a decimated Rexes squad. Drew Brees had the best week of any QB so far this season and tied an NFL record with 7 TDs, to help lead Nagintas. They now face off against the Chalupas in a huge divisional tilt. The Rexes dropped another one in a big way, and even a usually strong defence has fallen off. After passing on several offers for Matt Forte, the Rexes may have lost him long term, and his value has definitely taken a hit as a result. Will the vultures start swarming this week, trying to pick whatever aging talent is still left?
3-5 What Does John Fox Say (214.45) – 5-3 Loose Bandits (139.97)
WDJFS picks up their 2nd win in as many weeks with the smashing off the Bandits. Todd Gurley has been an absolute beast since getting on the field in Week 3, and has to be an early favourite for Rookie of the Year. With the win, WDJFS could potentially even think about playoffs if they can somehow run the table on their division over the last 5 weeks. Who would have thought? The Bandits season may have just come crashing down with this loss, especially with their stud RB Bell now lost for the year. Thankfully for them they have the Boners and Rexes the next 2 weeks before things get tough, facing off against the Idiots, Chalupas and Nagintas down the stretch.
6-2 Long Snappers (163.97) – 5-3 Endzone Dancers (138.36)
The Snappers continue to do just enough to win and are sitting in a good spot with 5 weeks remaining. Their WR made up for lacklustre performances in the running game and defensively to pull this one out, and solidify them as a playoff team, 1 season after being the EBFL Frittata. The Dancers let this one slip away and it could be costly, as they’re fighting for the division lead, and likely the only playoff spot from the Taco Corp. There wasn’t a whole lot to be happy about in this loss, outside of Snead and CJA.
7-1 Greg Schiano is an Idiot (226.14) – 4-4 Chalupa Batman (198.64)
In what many considered a possible championship game preview, these teams didn’t disappoint, as the Idiots held off the Chalupas in a high scoring affair. The Idiots showed again why they’re the class of EBFL this season, with the convincing win. While they lost Allen for the season, they should have Williams take over for Bell, so they shouldn’t miss a beat. The Chalupas were solid across the board on offense, other than a rare blip from ARod, but their defence isn’t at a championship level, costing them a shot at victory. Another big one awaits the Chalupas this week.
3-5 Fear Boners (174.87) – 2-6 Tom Selleck’s Moustache (145.80)
The Fear Boners essentially ended the Stache’s play-off hopes with their surprise win. Larry Fitzgerald continues his high level of play, and the rest of the club were good enough to get the win, and pick up an extra VP, which could come in handy when it’s time to decide which 4 teams are Playing for the Plates. Pretty much all that’s left for the Stache is could’a beens and next years. Not a single defender put up double digits, and other than OBJ and Freeman, the offence was pretty disappointing. It will be interesting to see what Smitty has up his sleeve as we head towards the trade deadline. Will he stand pat and hope to turn it around next season, or wheel and deal for futures?
Week 8 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week
Drew Brees (Deadly Nagintas) – Brees put up a record breaking performance in the win, tossing 7 touchdowns and throwing for over 500 yards.
Defensive Player of the Week
Luke Kuechly (Deadly Nagintas) – The Nagintas sweep the big awards this week, as Kuechly led defensive scoring, including a game preserving pick.
Rookie of the Week
Todd Gurley (What Does John Fox Say) – The award returns to WDJFS this week, with Gurley putting up yet another monster performance. He’s starting to make it look like what Scott gave up to get him was absolutely worth it.
Goat of the Week
Emmanuel Sanders (San Juan Bananas) – Peyton Manning finally shows up, and Sanders only manages 2 catches for 22 yards, potentially costing the Bananas a much needed victory.
Pickup of the Week
Jaquiski Tartt (Deadly Nagintas) – Tartt was instrumental in the Nagintas victory, putting up double digits in the defensive backfield.
Bench Player of the Week
Eli Manning (Rex in the City) – The Rexes get the award again this week, with a monster game from Eli Manning. It’s probably not good when you continue to have the best bench player.
Bonehead Coaching Move of the Week
N/A – I’m going to let this one slide this week, since for the first time in a while, all you morons managed to submit full line ups. Well done!
