Week 4 saw the 2nd round of divisional matchups as well as the first week of byes in the NFL, and while only 2 teams were off, it made things difficult for a handful of teams. The game of the week featured the undefeated Idiots and Snappers square off, and while the upstart Snappers put up a good fight early, the juggernaut Idiots pulled away for the easy to remain atop the overall standings. All in all, this week was low scoring, no doubt helped by several early injuries, to go along with a couple illegal line up penalties. Smitty and Scotty joined the ranks of the penalized. That should even things up for everyone come Frittata Bowl time.
Matchups
2-2 San Juan Bananas (182.47) – 1-3 Tom Selleck’s Moustache (155.96)
The Bananas were bailed out by the Stache’s illegal line up, making what could have been a close game, and possibly even a tough loss, into an easy victory. No one really stood out for the Bananas and things could have been ugly if not for OT in New Orleans, which had to be bittersweet for the Cowboys fan. The Stache have not been good this season, there’s no way around it. The only bright spot has been Devonta Freeman, and who knows how long that lasts once Coleman returns and that ends up as a RBBC. While they’re only 5 points out at this point, it’s going to be tough to make up that ground over the next 9 weeks, especially with a pair of match ups against the Idiots looming.
4-0 Greg Schiano is an Idiot (205.17) – 3-1 Long Snappers (168.72)
Another game, another easy win for the Idiots. Not even Gronk’s Bye week could slow them down as they put up the highest score for the week and gave the Snappers a dose of reality. The entire offense rolled and JJ Watt did what JJ Watt does. The Snappers were decent across the board, but there were no good/great performances beyond Tuitt and against the Idiots you have to bring it. That said, the Snappers are in a good spot so far, but will they be able to hold on to the playoff spot through the Bye weeks? It’s going to be tough.
3-1 Loose Bandits (191.91) – 2-2 Chalupa Batman (153.14)
The Bandits continue their surprising early run, this time knocking off early season favourite Chalupas in an important divisional tilt. Le’Veon Bell and Charles Clay led the way with solid games. After 4 weeks the Bandits only need 2 more VP to match their 2015 total. While they were projected to fight for the final playoff spot, they’ve likely exceeded Mo’s expectations to this point. The Chalupas have to be hugely disappointed with this loss, and can’t be thrilled about potentially losing 3 starters in the process as Kendricks, Freeman and Steve Smith all were injured. They have to hope Foster comes back strong on the short week against a terrible Indy run D, to get this squad rolling again.
3-1 Deadly Nagintas (197.79) – 0-4 Fear Boners (138.17)
The Nagintas took a slice out of the Boners for the largest margin of victory this week. Where’s the White Knuckler when you need her? The Nagintas were led by their defensive backfield, which stepped up huge in the absence of several LB. The Nagintas are back in the division lead, but they’ll need to get healthy to consider themselves contenders. The Boners are pretty much playing out the string already. Fitz had another nice game minus the drop, and Calais Campbell was a beast in the loss. I’m surprised K didn’t have David Johnson going to complete the Cards triumvirate. Must have been the fact they were up against his Rams that kept DJ out of the line up.
1-3 Knuckle Ballers (183.09) – 0-4 What Does John Fox Say (181.83)
Who would have thought the game between 2 winless teams would have been the best on the week. It went right down to the wire Monday night, with the Ballers pulling it out against a short-handed WDJFS by just over a point. Both teams came up with some solid rushing performances this week, especially Todd Gurley, who showed why Scotty made him the first pick in the draft. With the win and the extra VP in a down week, the Ballers find themselves only 2 points out of a playoff spot, almost a third of the way into the season. Anyone want to bet that whoever comes out of this division has fewer VP than the lowest Wildcard team?
3-1 Endzone Dancers (175.69) – 2-2 Rex in the City (165.36)
The Dancers find themselves on top of the Taco Corp Division after a 10 point win over the Rexes. Coby Fleener had maybe the best game of his career to go along with solid defensive performances from D’Qwell Jackson and Thomas Davis. The Dancers taking full advantage of others injuries to get the win. While it’s still early, Commish may be eyeing up that panic button, now sitting 3rd in the division he should be dominating. What looked like a sure playoff team 4 weeks ago, now looks old and slow, and could have to scrape and claw for a division title, which is likely the only ticket to the playoffs in this division.
Week 4 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week
Devonta Freeman (Tom Selleck’s Moustache) – Devonta Freeman had the highest score again this week, and this time earns the nod, as he was almost a full 9 points ahead of the next best. Unfortunately a wasted performance, due to Smitty’s incompetence (more on that later).
Defensive Player of the Week
Josh Norman (What Does John Fox Say) – Norman may be the best shut down corner in the game right now, and QB’s are finding out the hard way. If the season ended today, Norman would be my vote for DPOTY.
Rookie of the Week
Todd Gurley (What Does John Fox Say) – The future of the ground game for WDJFS looks pretty good as they take their second ROTW award in a row, this time with Gurley getting the nod. Over 160 total yards and a pair of receptions earned the #1 pick the recognition.
Goat of the Week
Joe Flacco (What Does John Fox Say) – Can’t really give it to Haden since he was inactive, so Joe Flacco’s dismal Thursday night effort earns it. Two turnovers, plus another fumble he recovered, under 200 yards and only 1 TD against a so so Steelers D.
Pickup of the Week
Jermain Kearse (Knuckle Ballers) – While he wasn’t the highest scorer out of this week’s pick ups, he likely was the most important, putting up 2 catches for 84 yards to help the Ballers pass WDJFS on Monday night.
Bench Player of the Week
Tavon Austin (Greg Schiano is an Idiot) – Remember this off-season when you couldn’t give away Tavon Austin? He’s already had 2 15+ point performances. Unfortunately he’s so boom or bust, he likely only has this award to look forward to week after week.
Bonehead Coaching Move of the Week
Scott Case/Ryan Smith (WDJFS/Tom Selleck’s Moustache) – Both had very winnable weeks, both left players in their line up that were out; Both are likely headed to the Frittata Bowl.
