Another fun filled week has come and gone in the EBFL, and it looks like we may have a real play-off race this season. Not like that everyone has clinched by week 9 nonsense from last season. This week featured 4 of the 5 teams considered title contenders during the pre-season squaring off, with the Chalupas and the Idiots getting a leg up on their direct competition. The Stache found the win column much earlier this season, only waiting until week 3. Baby steps. All in all we currently have 7 teams with winning records thus far, with 3 squads still looking for their first win. Guess who had as many receptions as Terrence Williams this week? All of you! Congrats, you’re now worth a late first.
Things start to get interesting from here, as injuries pile up and Bye weeks begin. Will there be a flurry of trade activity as teams scramble to cover massive holes in their line ups? When does the sell off begin for WDJFS and the Boners? Stay tuned to find out!
Matchups
3-0 Long Snappers (196.59) – 0-3 Fear Boners (160.29)
The Snappers run their season opening winning streak to a surprising 3 games in the cakewalk over the Boners. The Snappers have been a pleasant surprise to start the year, but we here at the Commish’s office think reality is about to set in, with their next 5 match ups being against 4 teams win winning records and division rival Bananas. If they can come out of that stretch with a .500 record overall, they very well could make the playoffs. The Boners were very underwhelming this week, and have dug themselves into a giant hole. A reasonable performance from their TE and DL in this game could have made it a different story. Leaving an injured Aaron Williams in the line up with end up costing them an incomplete line up penalty as well.
3-0 Greg Schiano is an Idiot (223.44) – 2-1 Rex in the City (182.43)
The Idiots continue to roll through the EBFL schedule, this time taking out the foot lickers from Rex in the City. They earn the maximum VP again this week, and I have a feeling they could end up besting the VP record set last season. The 182 points wont even earn Rexes a VP, so they go home empty handed this week. They are still in control of their division, but with next to no depth, the long stretch of Bye weeks could make things interesting for them.
2-1 Chalupa Batman (229.44) – 1-2 San Juan Bananas (169.61)
The Chalupas get back on track against the Bananas, who we still see as legit contenders, despite the slow start. Laker’s club climbs back atop the Senor Crabs Division, in what should be another tight race, maybe with 3 squads vying for the division crown. While the Bananas came away empty handed this week, they’re still a top 4 scoring club overall, and things should turn around for them. A Week 4 win against the Stache would be a huge step in that direction.
2-1 Deadly Nagintas (222.25) – 0-3 Knuckle Ballers (188.37)
The Nagintas carved up the Ballers to run their record over the .500 mark and stay in the division race. With 3 of the 4 top teams in All-Play Record, maybe all of that talk about the Yobagoya being the top division was a little premature. If the Nagintas can tread water until several of their stars return, they may have an outside shot at returning to the title game. The Ballers schedule hasn’t been kind, but they’re also not strong enough to hang with the big boys. They’re going to need wins in 3 of the next 4, which may be doable, to even consider a playoff run. If that doesn’t happen, we may have a 3rd team as an early seller.
1-2 Tom Selleck’s Moustache (213.60) – 0-3 What Does John Fox Say (142.21)
The Stache get on the board with their first win of the 2015 season, while posting the biggest victory of Week 3. Three stand out offensive performances contributed over 100 points and paced them to the big win. I don’t think you’ll see that happen again, and depth could be an issue heading into Bye weeks. It will be a dog fight for the Stache to make their first EBFL playoff appearance. WDJFS’s season has gone from bad to worse with the loss of Big Ben. The lone bright spot on this team is the secondary, which very well may end up the highest scoring defensive backfield in the league when all is said and done.
2-1 Endzone Dancers (213.11) – 2-1 Loose Bandits (192.63)
The Dancers waltzed to victory over the Bandits by the slimmest margin in the league this week (although it was still over 20 points). The Dancers trade paid immediate dividends with the ‘throw-in’ going for over 20 points to lead the way. If the Dancers can upset the Rexes this week, they would be division leaders for the first time in their existence. The Bandits get their superstar running back returning off suspension and promptly lose their first game of the year…go figure. The sledding gets tougher from here for the squad, as they face contenders in 3 of the next 4 weeks, plus the upstart Snappers. If they don’t pull off at least 2 wins in that stretch, they can probably kiss the playoffs good bye.
Week 3 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week
AJ Green (Deadly Nagintas) – Devonta Freeman had a huge week for the Stache, but Green was a 2 yard reception away from breaking the WR scoring record. A monster 4th quarter picked up wins for both the Bengals and the Nagintas.
Defensive Player of the Week
Tyrann Mathieu (Long Snappers) – Posluszny put up serious points for the Rexes, but it was Mathieu who was a difference maker this week, taking one of his 2 picks to the house, to add to a nice tackle and passes defenced stat line.
Rookie of the Week
Karlos Williams (What Does John Fox Say) – Fresh off the Taxi Squad, Williams put fellow running mate Todd Gurley on notice with another solid performance. Williams has his first 100 yard game, and has found the endzone each week so far, to put himself square in the ROTY race.
Goat of the Week
Roddy White (Rex in the City) – Another zero for Roddy this week, this time it was costly as the Rexes fell to the Idiots. Matty Ice appears to only have eyes for Julio.
Pickup of the Week
Malcolm Smith (Tom Selleck’s Moustache) – Smitty finally bailed on Sio Moore, and it paid off as his replacement had a great week in the Stache victory.
Bench Player of the Week
Andy Dalton (Loose Bandits) – A monster 4th quarter propelled the Red Rocket to the second highest QB score this week. Those points would have made things interesting in the Bandits loss to the Dancers.
Bonehead Coaching Move of the Week
Bryan Kamerman (Fear Boners) – Another week, another invalid line up. This time it was the Boners starting an injured Aaron Williams. The lesson here: re-shingle your roof in the off-season!
