Welcome to the first 2015 edition of the Weekly Recap.
It was an interesting first week in the EBFL, with a few of last years Frittata Bowl participants picking up early wins. The Idiots made the statement that they’ll be tough to beat, with a record performance (although the increase in defensive scoring also played a big factor). A couple teams were very fortunate to pull off wins despite some terrible performances, and injuries are already starting to take their toll on a few teams.
Matchups
1-0 Long Snappers (164.27) – 0-1 Tom Selleck’s Moustache (140.82)
The Snappers pick up a big win to start 2015 off on the right foot. They’ll need some better performances to keep pace in this division though. The Stache can’t blame the schedule this year, losing to the reigning Frittata with a league worst score. This defence is going to have to shape up, or it could be another long season for the facial hair.
1-0 Greg Schiano is an Idiot (255.98) – 0-1 San Juan Bananas (212.79)
The Idiots showed who’s boss in the EBFL this season, winning this heavyweight matchup and taking the early division lead. It will be tough for anyone to knock off this formidable line up on both sides of the ball. The Bananas put up a good fight, but giving up JJ Watt to their division rival likely means they’re second fiddle to the Idiots all season. A pair of VP in the loss is a decent consolation prize.
1-0 Loose Bandits (171.46) – 0-1 Fear Boners (161.19)
The Bandits were very fortunate to come away with the win this week, edging the bottom feeding Boners by 10 points. With several players under 2 points, the Bandits still managed to pull off the win and pick up some valuable points as they wait to get LeVeon Bell back. There was a little good, and a whole lot of bad for the Boners, as several players had nice games, but the D outside of Matthews and Glover were awful. It’s going to be a long limp season in Bonerland.
1-0 Chalupa Batman (214.00) – 0-1 Deadly Nagintas (198.76)
The Chalupas showed they’re going to compete for the title again this year, putting up the 3rd most points in the victory over the Nagintas. Pretty much the entire offense was rolling, and the defence did enough to hang on for the win. The Nagintas put up a decent fight, but injuries to Mike Evans and Dez Bryant, and a brutal performance by Peyton Manning doomed them to a season opening loss. With Bryant out for 2 months or so, several players are going to have to step up to keep them in the playoff picture.
1-0 Endzone Dancers (147.78) – 0-1 What Does John Fox Say (145.65)
The Dancers come away with the 2 points in this ‘battle’ between likely Frittata contestants. If not for the injury to Luke Keuchly, and Thomas Davis stepping up, this could have been ugly. The Dancers can’t be satisfied despite the win. I’m pretty sure the defence outscored the offence for WDJFS. That’s generally not a good thing. How long will it be before WDJFS finally admits his team can’t compete in 2015?
1-0 Rex in the City (216.17) – 0-1 Knuckle Ballers (165.65)
The Rexes begin defence of their championship with a big win over the Ballers. The Rexes should have a cake walk to the playoffs with 6 games against the patsies in the Taco Corp division. They better take advantage again this year, because the cliff is fast approaching with all of the senior citizens on this club. The Ballers have some nice pieces, and will win some games this year. Unfortunately, they don’t have the horses to hang with the playoff calibre teams right now.
Week 1 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week
Carlos Hyde (San Juan Bananas) – Out from behind Frank Gore’s shadow, Hyde put on an impressive display Monday night with over 180 yards and 2 TDs. He’ll be leaned on heavily with Reggie Bush banged up.
Defensive Player of the Week
JJ Watt (Greg Schiano is an Idiot) – This may eventually be named the JJ Watt Defensive Player of the Week award. He was his usual dominant self, leading the Idiots to a win over his former team.
Rookie of the Week
Ameer Abdullah (Loose Bandits) – Abdullah had a solid debut, with almost 100 yards on only 11 touches. He tacked on his first career TD for good measure. The Bandits have to like their future at the RB position.
Goat of the Week
Peyton Manning (Deadly Nagintas) – A reasonable day out of Manning likely gets the Nagintas at least another VP, and possibly the 2 for the win. This lousy performance could set the tone for a rough season for the Nagintas.
Pickup of the Week
N/A – There wasn’t a single Week 1 pick up worth mentioning, even those on the bench.
Bench Player of the Week
Tyler Eifert (Fear Boners) – His 26.90 points were the best by any non-QB on the bench this week. The Boners really could have used him in a 10 point loss.
Bonehead Coaching Move of the Week
Ryan Smith (Tom Selleck’s Moustache) – Smitty’s unrelenting love of Sio Moore didn’t help his cause any this week. The Stache’s defence may again prevent them from being a playoff team.
