It was quite the exciting week in the EBFL with quite a few wild scores, and a number of significant trades as well. Speaking of wild scoring, every weekly offensive individual scoring record fell this week, including a couple for rookies. The high scoring made for some pretty big swings in a few of the matchups, with what looked like sure losses turning into easy victories. On the trading side, it’s clear the bottom half of the league is currently in sell mode, as a couple of the teams have started clearing out some older players, acquiring some youth and picks. The Boners decided they didn’t have the horses to compete this year, and sent a 35 year old Brees, and a 28 year old Foster packing. It’s probably not long before a 31 year old Fitzgerald and 33 year old Johnson follow. The Snappers also got in the mix moving stud TE, Julius Thomas, and turning over a number of players to build a solid young WR corps for the future.
Keep an eye out for another Commish Report later this week where we’ll take a look at the EBFL by the numbers.
Matchups
6-2 Knuckle Ballers (214.06) – 1-7 Tom Selleck’s Moustache (161.82)
Well, the Stache finally caught a break, with the Ballers leaving 2 top 6 scorers on their bench this week. Unfortunately those that were still in the line up rolled to a 52 point victory behind the 3rd highest score in the league this year. I think you can say good night to the Stache’s chances for this season. Will they try to move on from some of their under achieving roster, or will they stand pat and show faith in the guys that consistently put up average weekly scores? The Ballers now sit alone atop the EBFL standings, with 26 victory points are a virtual playoff lock.
5-3 San Juan Bananas (196.00) – 6-2 Deadly Nagintas (148.94)
The Bananas dominated this match up of division leaders on the backs of their RB. All 3 put up at least 18 points to pace the squad to victory. Not sure how thrilled Coach Bobber is with Ryan Kerrigan after he knocked Tony Romo out of the Monday nighter, likely costing his beloved Cowboys a win. Most of the Nagintas had solid weeks with a couple notable exceptions, Michael Floyd and Isaiah Crowell. It likely wouldn’t have been enough to catch the Bananas though. The Nagintas are now officially on a losing streak, and have to hope a matchup with the lowly Bandits can get them back on track.
7-1 Chalupa Batman (186.38) – 1-7 Greg Schiano is an Idiot (176.74)
The Chalupas pulled out a tight one this week against the Idiots, thanks to their recent acquisition of Arian Foster. His record breaking performance helped put the squad in a tie for the Senor Crabs divison lead. Antonio Brown has put himself in the OPOTY talk at the halfway point with yet another huge game. The Idiots got a monster game out of Rob Gronkowski, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Chalupas, thanks to a couple poor performances on offense, especially this week’s Goat, Torrey Smith. With 5 weeks remaining, the Idiots are left to play spoiler, and could have a significant impact on who comes out of the Yobagoya division.
7-1 What Does John Fox Say? (187.62) – 1-7 Loose Bandits (151.12)
WDJFS put up their biggest score of the season, thanks to a record breaking performance from Big Ben. Early on it looked like the Bandits may pull off the upset, but the late afternoon games turned the tides in their opponents favour. With the win, WDJFS keeps pace with their division rivals, and tightens their grip on a playoff position in the process. The Bandits got several solid performances out of their young WR’s, but were let down in a number of other positions to drop to 1-7. They have the inside track on the #1 pick with only a handful of weeks to go. Will they also be the first Sacko ‘winner’?
6-2 Rex in the City (187.40) – 3-5 Long Snappers (155.60)
In this battle of bothers, the Rexes came out on top, despite a poor performance from Jordy Nelson, and their newest member, Julius Thomas. Thankfully for them, the team is loaded with studs and they easily overcame those lousy games to keep pace in the Taco Corp division. With the impending Byes of most of their studs still ahead, the Rexes may be playing for the top Wild Card spot. Despite the Snappers being 2 games under .500, they’re still in the mix in the Yobagoya division. They have made a number of moves to get younger, but they’ve acquired some serious talent in the process, and could still squeak in with a late run. They may be a little light at the RB position to do so though.
2-6 Endzone Dancers (139.64) – 3-5 Fear Boners (111.84)
Despite the 3 game winning streak, the Fear Boners have started shipping off their senior members to try and make a quick turnaround for 2015. As a result, they fell in the lowest scoring game of the week to the Dancers, who are also looking ahead to next year. These 2 squads could be big players as we approach the trade deadline, which is only 2 and a half weeks away. The Dancers were happy to see some life out of Keenan Allen, who they expected much more from at the start of the year. Maybe all of the crappy trade offers for him will begin improving.
Week 8 Awards
Offensive Player of the Week
Ben Roethlisberger (What Does John Fox Say?) – On a day when so many players went off, none compared to the 500+ yards and 6 TD’s by the (alleged) rapist.
Defensive Player of the Week
Anthony Barr (Rex in the City) – It was a solid game through regulation, but Barr’s strip, recovery and TD return for the OT win sealed the award for this week.
Rookie of the Week
Anthony Barr (Rex in the City) – See above.
Goat of the Week
Torrey Smith (Greg Schiano is an Idiot) – Torrey didn’t even see a target. That really hurts in a single digit loss.
Pickup of the Week
Heath Miller (Long Snappers) – None of the other picks ups that were started did much of anything, so the nod goes to Miller who put up 112 yards and a TD in a Steelers blowout.
Bench Player of the Week
Emmanuel Sanders (Knuckle Ballers) – The Ballers had both the #5 and #6 scorers for Week 8…on their bench. Neither was a stretch to be sitting either…this is why the Ballers are the odds on favourites to win the inaugural EBFL crown.
Bonehead Coaching Move of the Week
Ryan Smith (Tom Selleck’s Moustache) – With all signs pointing to Trent Richardson not playing (or at least not contributing), there had to be at least one other Flex play on the roster.
