We’ve reached the halfway point of the 2014 season, and I think we now have enough data to take a look at some of the trends in the EBFL. We’re going to examine some league wide numbers, as well as some team by team numbers to get a better idea of who’s doing what with their line ups and how those line ups are performing.
Weekly Scoring
Here are everyone’s averages through 8 weeks of match ups:
Team | Offense | Defense | Total | High | Low |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Chalupa Batman | 121.09 | 45.30 | 166.39 | 203.22 | 144.58 |
Deadly Nagintas | 107.58 | 59.95 | 167.53 | 197.04 | 145.20 |
Endzone Dancers | 89.30 | 53.25 | 142.55 | 170.20 | 114.52 |
Fear Boners | 95.32 | 50.43 | 145.75 | 185.06 | 111.84 |
Greg Schiano Idiots | 96.19 | 53.70 | 149.89 | 176.74 | 110.06 |
Knuckle Ballers | 135.17 | 49.95 | 185.12 | 214.06 | 119.58 |
Long Snappers | 97.63 | 60.39 | 158.02 | 187.56 | 122.14 |
Loose Bandits | 91.10 | 53.51 | 144.61 | 174.72 | 129.34 |
Rex in the City | 117.81 | 64.93 | 182.74 | 217.58 | 135.98 |
San Juan Bananas | 113.74 | 56.26 | 170.00 | 225.44 | 137.12 |
Tom S’s Moustache | 110.37 | 46.87 | 157.24 | 169.18 | 145.98 |
WDJFS | 101.52 | 58.32 | 159.84 | 187.62 | 136.54 |
Avg | 106.39 | 54.40 | 160.79 |
I see a few interesting pieces of information from this chart:
- If you’re not scoring at least 161 points in a week, there’s a good chance you aren’t going to be winning.
- The Stache are the only above average offensive team currently sitting out of the playoffs.
- The Snappers are the only above average defensive team currently sitting out of the playoffs.
- The Chalupas have the worst defensive unit in the league, but are leading their division. If they want to compete for a title, this number likely has to come up. Giving 15 to 20 points to the other playoff teams is not a recipe for sustained success.
- The Stache have the lowest high score, as well as the highest low score. If nothing else, they’re a consistent squad.
- The offense clearly drives each team’s total as the highest and lowest scoring teams overall, also have the highest and lowest scoring offenses.
- Had WDJFS held on to JJ Watt, they’re likely right with the Rexes for top defense.
- Defenses need a slight bump in scoring next season, as they’re currently only about 1/3 of the average total score and ideally I’d like them a little closer to 40%. I’ll likely table a proposal for this before the next Commish Report, so you can be prepared heading into the off-season.
Positional Scoring
These teams are all above average for positional scoring. I put all non-playoff position teams in italics:
QB: WDJFS, Stache, Rexes, Chalupas, Ballers, Idiots
RB: Rexes, WDJFS, Ballers, Boners, Chalupas, Bananas, Stache
WR: Ballers, Chalupas, Nagintas, Bananas, Idiots, Boners
TE: Ballers, Snappers, Idiots, Chalupas, Nagintas, Dancers
DL: Nagintas, Bananas, Ballers, WDJFS, Idiots, Boners, Bandits, Rexes
LB: Snappers, Rexes, Nagintas, Dancers, Bananas, WDJFS, Stache
DB: WDJFS, Bandits, Rexes, Nagintas
Some of these can be explained by looking at the weekly line up composition, while others are based more on actual strength at the position. For example, WDJFS has had at least 4 more DB performances than any other roster, so it makes sense he’d be the top team at that position. Note that the Chalupas show up in every offensive category, but not a single defensive one. The Ballers show up in every offensive position list as well. The Nagintas, Rexes and WDJFS are above average across all defensive positions. Up until the past 2 weeks, the Nagintas were above average in every category, but QB and RB have fallen off a cliff.
Weekly Line-ups
I also took a look at the weekly line up composition of all of the teams in the league to see what the popular flex combinations are, as well as who sticks with certain patterns, and who is all over the place. Here are a few of the tidbits I found:
- The most popular line up by far is the 3RB/4WR/1TE on offense, with about 45% usage, followed by 5WR with 25%. To the surprise of no one, there hasn’t been a single 3TE set used.
- On defense, LB are easily the popular flex with roughly 73% usage. Only 2 squads have used a DL, with the league leading Ballers leading the way at 3 times.
- The Fear Boners and San Juan Bananas have used the fewest line-up combos, both using the popular line up as well as the 5WR, all with LB in the D Flex.
- On the other end of the spectrum, 4 teams have rolled with 5 different line up combos. The Idiots, Ballers, Snappers and Stache have the most variety.
- WDJFS has been the most consistent, running out 4 RB 7 times, as well as a DB in the flex 7 times. No one else has used a DB more than 3 times.
- The Loose Bandits have been heaviest on WR use, with 14 of a possible 16 flex usages.
- The Ballers and Rexes have the heaviest TE usage. Maybe that’s the key to being at the top of the standings?
Well that’s it for this edition! Hope you’ve found this at least semi-informative. The next Commish Report will likely be a playoff preview coming in Week 13. Good luck to everyone down the stretch!
